Is this Russian girl scamming me? How to recognize scammers

Are you an American or Western European man exchanging emails with a girl from Russia? I was contacted by a girl who turned out to be a scammer. Reader Derrick put together some great advice how to detect scammers.
I only have one advice (#8) to add: If a Russian girl tells you that she will get a visa to the USA instead of inviting you, that is - under the current immigration law - a SURE sign that SHE LIES.

Here is the process how a Russian woman can come to the USA:

If she is considered a relatively young/ attractive woman (let's say under 40, hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings here), then there is virtually NO CHANCE THAT SHE GETS A TOURIST VISA TO THE USA. First the Russian Federation will not allow her to leave the country. Then, even if she was getting out, the USA will deny her admission. The reasoning is that she is considered a risk. How could she not be a risk? If she had family in Russia (husband, children) or a valuable business or real estate. Most likely the woman who writes you will be considered a risk. The only way for her to get a visa into the USA is this procedure:

  1. the foreign man visits her in her native area in Russia
  2. they get engaged during such a visit - take photos of the 2 of you together
  3. he flies back and applies for a K-1 visa. A K-1 visa is also known as Fiancee visa, used for marriage-based immigration
  4. once the K1 visa is granted, the girl can enter the USA and stay there for 3 months. By the end of these 3 months you HAVE to GET MARRIED or the girl has to go back home.
  5. if you get married, the girl gets a greencard and can work
  6. after 3 years of marriage, the girl can apply for a US citizenship. That's when they interview you to find out if it's a real marriage. She also has to answer some questions about US history, political system, etc etc.

Here are Derrick's tricks (1-7) that he uses immediately from the start:
  1. GOOGLE or websearch the first part of the scammers first emails and/or 'profile'. SEE HOW MANY OTHER SITES their listed on! RECORD THOSE SITES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THAT alone can give you a good idea IF your dealing with a scammer OR not.
  2. GOOGLE or websearch the return email address. See how many 'hits' come from that search and also note all the sites. (many times you'll see the email end up on a 'scammers list') IF YOU FIND THE EMAIL ADDRESS LISTED ON A SCAMMER LIST - don't bother further, your only fooling yourself - no matter what excuse they might give you.
  3. FROM THE START - ASK FOR SPECIFIC INFOMATION! A full name, address, phone number - something. OFFER THE SAME in exchange, except make it a P.O. box and a CELL PHONE rental card that will protect your identity. If you see your requests ignored, which you usually will, don't waste your time further.
  4. ALWAYS ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS that would REQUIRE A SPECIFIC ANSWER outside the use of FORM LETTERS. IF YOU FIND your questions go unaddress in your reply emails from 'them/her' - YOUR DEALING WITH A SCAMMER. Again, don't bother further.
  5. DON'T WAIT 6 MONTHS to offer to talk with the PROSPECT by phone! WHAT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! IF THERE IS CHEMISTRY OR APPEARS 'INTEREST' BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU - then sieze the opportunity. ARRANGE A PHONE CALL! International rates to Russia and most places are reasonably cheap. IF YOU GET THE REPLY ' I'M SO POOR I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE' - drop the whole thing, your only wasting your time and WILL BE SCAMMED at some point in the future.
  6. PHOTO FLOOD! IF IT/SHE/HIM/THEM - LOOK TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - THEN IT PROBABLY IS! MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE SCAMMES USE PHOTOS OF MODELS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES TO POSE ON THE NET IN THEIR PROFILE(s)! Consider this - IF THEY LOOK like a MODEL then tell you they're so poor they don't have access to a phone - YOUR BEING SCAMMED!

ASK FOR A SPECIAL PHOTO TO BE TAKEN. IF YOU SENT YOURS, HAVE THEM TAKE A PHOTO SHOWING THEM HOLDING UP YOUR PHOTO IN THE PICTURE! That is a good 'scammer filter' - even the most adept with Photoshop will easily be spoted.

BETTER STILL - ASK THEM TO TAKE A PHOTO THAT SHOWS THEM HOLDING A CURRENT NEWPAPER OF YOUR CHOICE OR THEIR COUNTRY, WITH A RESOLUTION THAT YOU CAN READ THE DATE! NOT some low grade - grainy photo! FEW WILL EVER DO THAT.

AT THE LEAST - ASK THEM FOR A PHOTO of them wearing a specific combination of clothes and/or colors - something different then the usual 'model clothing' - most use to send out. OR AN OBJECT - TOASTER, ELECTRIC CLOCK, BY A COUCH, IN A ROCKING CHAIR something that would be very hard to use PHOTOSHOP to just PUT in another FILE PHOTO.

*** IF this person is real or sincere, they won't mind doing this for you! ALSO - offer to do the same for their comfort also - that is only fair.
  7. IF THINGS GET SERIOUS - then ASK THEM TO DELETE ALL THEIR OTHER WEB PROFILE POSTS! CHECK ON THE ONES YOU NOTED EARLIER! Again, IF THEIR SINCERE - they will - happily as your their DREAM and future!
  8. If she talks about getting a visa or that she needs money to get a travel visa to the USA, she lies. See the proper course of action described at the top.

Yeah, you're right Peter. But it seems they already do know about this site. Some scammers are using the same name just different pictures. Good in a way because they are leaving one woman alone. Bad because they are using someone else. A no with situation.

Hi All!

Thank you for all of this information!

Before I go to the next level, I wanted to ask a few questions. I will give you a potted history:

1.) This girl has Emailed me.

2.) The Email address she used to send to me wasn't mine and there weren't other Email addresses listed to whom she sent.

3.) I replied then she replied but didn't answer any of my questions (although some were answered it seems by coincidence).

4.) I copied and pasted sentences from all of her Emails into Google and many listings came up.

5.) I realised the personal information was unique (address, name, measurements etc.)

6.) I wondered if she spoke English or if she is sitting in front of a translation of my Email and then choosing sentences from a list composed by the people who have developed such a site in order to answer.

7.) After having seen the photos, they all make sense. Her father looks like her father and she has a university graduation photo etc.

8.) I sent an Email to her today and then used http://www.translat..ranslate_t to translate the entire thing into Russian and then I sent that. She only Emails me early in the morning and so I haven't had a reply yet. I was wondering if this would make a difference.

9.) At end of Email I listed all questions again so that she wouldn't have to work so hard to find all the questions in order to answer them (especially since English isn't her first language). I wondered if this would put scammers off or if it would make things too complicated for her (or scammers).

Is there any chance that this is a real person who just doesn't know much English but wants to make this work? If she is using a programme where she fills in the blanks with her personal information does this mean she hasn't got a clue about translation sites like the above? If I Email her the URL of this translation site, will they stop her account? Why has she Emailed me her home address so early on? Is this because of the 30 day thing? Does this show she is a real person? I sent her some pictures of me and she made a reply after that. Would it have mattered what I looked like? If she knew about translation sites then would she just use a yahoo or hotmail address to Email me and send translations of her Emails? I am from England, but I have been brought up in a more classical and European way. Is it a requirement for Western men who date Russian women like this to learn how to speak Russian? I can learn it and would love to learn it. However, I need to know if this is all genuine before I start. Is it a full gone conclusion that she will ask me to pay for her to come over to the UK? Is she expecting to live with me straight away? Should I give her my address at this point? If not, why not? Should I use the sending of flowers idea at this point?

If you can answer my questions, I would be truly grateful! If you need more info from her Emails, please let me know.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this which I'm sure is a very familiar style message to you all.

Kindest wishes and thank you in advance!

Hi dear Anthony!!!

It is very pleasant for me to receive and write to you letters.

When I come in Internet - cafe and I see your letter, at me is cheered up.

When I read your letter, to me to become very joyfully on soul.

Especially it is pleasant for me to read the big letters, in fact in them it is possible to learn a lot of useful about each other.

I would like to write to you a little more on myself.

And in this letter I would like to tell a little about the past.

I was born in the city of Cheboksary and it is my native city.

As to me my mum told, that they lived with mine the daddy and with me in a hostel.

The daddy for that moment worked at an industrial factory. The factory let out various building materials.

It was the usual employee. It worked there about 10 years.

And when I it is literally in two years to my father distances from the organization in which it worked, an apartment was born.

Then the factory has gone bankrupt also it have closed. Father was arranged for various works, it was arranged to work as the driver of a shuttle bus on city.

I was taught 11 classes, have received the certificate at school.

Has then acted in polytechnical university in our city and studied at faculty (the social worker).

All time seemed to me, that very interestingly and now I understand it, that have correctly made, that have gone to study by this trade.

I studied there 6 years and basically us learned to use a computer.

At last I have stopped, have received the diploma. In the diploma at me only two four and did not give me the red diploma.

Certainly, for that moment I have been very much upset.

Some time I searched to myself for work, and now at me remarkable work.

First I worked as the seller in shop, but all spoke me, that it is not serious.

Because I have received higher education and I work in shop.

But it seems to me, that it is better to work somewhere, than simply so to sit at home.

Then, I was the teacher of aerobics in elementary grades. And now, now, very much to like me my work!

Small history about me. I can tell about the past for a long time.

It would be interesting to me, that you would tell about yourselves. It would be pleasant for me to learn, how you lived, dear Anthony.

I wish you successful day that at you all was good also an at home and on work. I shall wait your letter with impatience.

The best regards Valentina.

Except for Derricks tricks I would like to add some useful information for you fellows. Let me first add to this that I have been several times in most part of Eastern Europe, even been married to one and had few gf there.

ABC Scaming check list for dummies:

Avoid so called 'Kinder Egg dating sites'. A dating site who provide you with 3 services (suprises) in 1.

Suprise no 1: All you customers talk with the same few dudes.
Suprise no 2: Background investigations shows nothing then traces of virginty and Mother Theresa personality.
Suprise no 3: Persons who provide for the translations are same persons as 'Suprise no 1 and 2'.

Congratulations:
1.You just found a match as dumb as you are. You not only talking with dudes, but you actually paying for doing so.
2. Like in the rest of the world there are very few virgins over 18 in Eastern Europe. But if they are, it is most likely because she very religious (should be stated in profile) or she have been falling from the worlds largest ugly tree, or she is actually a he, but if you not so picky, well...
3. Why pay for expensive translations? On the internet you can find many free online translation sites of different quality. Also there is possible to buy software programs like 'Promt Personal', and this for the cost of what you would have payed for one translation. Price for software is around $30. Note! The translations are not always perfect >> but fully understandable <<.

A. INITIAL CONTACT
- Asking only for your email address, no further information.
- Offer erotic or easy dressed pics.
- Strange settings or/and empty spaces between lines in messages.
- Pics look to good to be true
- She could be your daughter or granddaughter.
- First instinct.

If she in first message or mail provide non information what so ever about herself. Instead write something like ' send me your email address and I send you my pics...' Then she/he is 'fishing' for your email address. Before you go for the 'bate' you might want to consider the following: Any serious person who are truly interested in someone put some effort in making good impression to the person they are interested in. If the message or mail she sent takes 20 seconds or less to write you, that is how interesting you are for her. >>This also goes other way around, consider this when you send a woman your very own 'unique' message.<< Erotic or easy dressed pics? Even if woman of your dream would turn out to be a star in an adult movies in her past, she would never ever consider tell you so, even less send you her pics if she have truly serious intentions about relationship or marriage. A so called normal family girl would at most send you her pics from the beach. When a Eastern Europe girl is serious she is careful just like any other girl not to give the wrong impression. Strange settings in messages or empty spaces between lines is because the person sent you the message have copy and past the message into her mail. This could be for two reasons. To save money by write you the message offline before spent her money on dial up connections. But most likely it´s because the person is copy and past their standard letters to several persons. Pics who look to good to be true, usually are. If you are into erotic photos, there are several free adult sites provide this. A dating site is not the right place search for this. If she young enough to be your daughter or your granddaughter. Well, in the last case I suggest you contact professional help for your sexual interest is toward pre-pubescent youths. Surely is not strange with age differences between 10-15 years, but if more... No comment! If you are not handsome enough to attract younger girls in your own native country, you will not attract them in Eastern Europe either. Girls are girls no matter where they live, and their idol posters on their walls surely not contain any less handsome male at the age of +40. Maybe Eastern Europe girls (women have other preferences) not ask for a a man with a six pack on his stomach. But if you are not somewhat attractive, they will look at size of your wallet ONLY. If you happy with that, well then you two deserve each other and the life you will have. But then again, if you settle with such agreement. Why are you then here on this site, reading this advices? Instinct. Trust your own instinct, first instinct are usually right. If initial contact doesn´t feel ok, then go on in your search. Google unique part of her message she sent you on mail. like this >> 'I like garlic' << , do not use formal sentences like >> 'hello my dear' <<. If she/he is a scammer you most likely will find other allready reported this letter.

B. FURTHER CONTACT
- She never ask you about your work, family, interests, etc...
- She never answer your questions.
- She never take initial contact.
- Presents, Creditcards, Cars, gifts, etc...
- No Telephone contact

All this are warning signals you should take under strong consideration. If she not ask you for your family, relation towards your family, etc.. She clearly have no serious intentions about you or your life. As soon as her permanent VISA or greencard is in her hand, she will get out of your hands. If she not answer your questions about her family, relation with family, etc. Then she probably hide something for some reason. No matter what, that is never good since I know atleast myself could never live with woman who hide things from me. But could also be that she selfish, egocentric and are looking for a 'winner', checking the size of your wallet, material well fare to compare with her other admires. She never take initial contact. Reason could be many. She to busy correspond with all new interesting men, she have no serious interest in you, she thinks that it´s the mans job to work for her. Comment to this. If she really wants you, she will work for it as well. For all you dumbass who send women you never meet in real life wedding rings, credit cards, presents, gifts... I-D-I-O-T-S ! I have meet and I know Eastern Europe girls in real life who have small fortune from all goldrings, etc you dumbasses have sent them. I know IN REAL LIFE girls who use credit cards their admires sent, they use it for buy ticket for meet younger men for fun weekends, etc... A girl who would accept such gifts as creditcard, gold rings, etc.. Let me tell you this, THEY ARE NOT IMPRESSED! THEY ARE NOT SERIOUS! They laugh about it. They have no respect for stupid men. Are you one? I know one girl who even got a new car... Ufff.... Are we men really that stupid? Yes we are! Phone calls. Arrange a phone call. Ask for mobil. No mobil? --> Ask for homephone. No homephone? --> Ask for friends mobil. No friends? = Scammer.

C. MEETING IRL

Less smart men --> Invite her for first time. But never transfer any money to her for buying her own ticket. Instead you can easily find and contact any major airlines office online and buy ticket to her directly from them. After the airline received the money, they will provide you with information she need for pick up her ticket in any major city where they are represented. So don´t choose major airline in your own country, but in hers. Why is this smarter then sent her money by transfer? Well, because many if not all airlines company have a 'No refound policy'. Meaning she can never sell the ticket, never cash it in for money, etc.. Make sure inform her about it. She claims there are no airline company her city? Make her happy by tell her that when she must go Moscow for her VISA, she can easily pick it up there =) If she can not make the effort to go any major city for pick up the ticket, she surely will not make the effort to come visit you.

More smart men --> Travell to visit her country and hometown for the first meeting. First of all, this way you never have to worry she will take your money and never hear from her again. Second, this is your great chance to know what kind girl you will marry. Will she introduce you to her family? if Not. This is very bad sign unless they are all dead. Look at her friends, what kind person they are will show you who she REALLY is. She pick the most expensive restaurant in town? She loves spend your money? Well, let me tell you that it will be no change in that after marriage if so. She never turn up to meet you in the airport? Stop crying and go the local clubs, and you will soon have forgotten her.
